Hornets and others hope to shine at Sac State Pro Day

Sacramento—With the NFL Draft Combine over and the NFL Draft starting April 26, teams will turn their scouting focus to Pro Days for a closer look at potential NFL prospects.

Sacramento State will hold a Pro Day at Hornet Stadium on Tuesday at 10 a.m., and will be open to the public.  A Pro Day consists of various football related workouts, as well as tests of overall athleticism.  The workouts will feature athletes from Sacramento State, UC Davis and a few other schools.

For the Hornets, the participating athletes will be defensive end Zack Nash, wide receivers Brandyn Reed and Chase Deadder and quarterback Jeff Fleming.

No other schools could be reached for confirmation on which of their athletes would be attending the Pro Day.  Sac State’s Sports Information Director Brian Berger said there will be about 20 NFL scouts in attendance.

Sac State Morning Call: 2012 First Edition

Please pardon us for the break in news on SacStateSports.com. We’ve been under the weather with a flu that knocked us out for three days. We’re back with the first Morning Call of 2012 with lots of links:

The Hornets men’s team has a few days off before it plays its Big Sky home opener against Northern Colorado on Saturday. Today’s video came from the Bears’ preseason boot camp:

In Hornets-related basketball news:

* The Big Sky Conference announced that Kyle Kuhns was selected as the women’s player of the week after helping Sac State start 2-0 in league play.

* The Sacramento Bee reported women’s assistant Bill Baxter’s previous team, El Camino High, has moved into No. 7 in the area prep girls rankings.

* Joe Davidson’s Hometown Report featured  the Sac City College men’s team, which includes former Hornet Antwoine Davis.

* The Big Sky published its men’s basketball notes.

* The Sacramento Bee’s Dave Carpenter wrote about Walter Jackson quitting the men’s team in his weekly basketball notes. Just so you know, SacStateSports.com’s Bryan Metcalf broke that story Friday.

In other Hornets-related sports news:

* The San Francisco Chronicle’s picked Andrew Luck’s 10 best plays at Stanford and the list included a bomb he threw during the 2010 opener against Sac State.

* And from Oregon State land, Corvallis Gazette-Times beat writer Cliff Kirkpatrick had his football predictions for 2012 and even got a mention of Sac State in there.

* The Vacaville Reporter picked Zack Nash’s record season as one of its stories of the year.

Sac State Morning Call: Saturday Edition

Finals are over, which means basketball is back in full swing, despite the holidays. The men have two games next week and the women have three in the next five days. Oh, there’s also football recruiting. Who says there’s a holiday break from Sac State sports?

Today’s video looked at Jon Greenwalt, a wide receiver from the 11-0 Riverside Community College who announced this week that he had committed to Sac State. He’s No. 4 in these highlights from his freshman season.

In Hornets-related sports news:

* Joe Davidson of The Sacramento Bee reported that Sacramento State will bid for the state football bowl and regional championships next season.

* The Vacaville Reporter wrote about hometown kid Zack Nash being selected as an FCS all-American.

* CBSSports.com mentioned men’s basketball player Dylan Garrity, who is ranked No. 14 in the nation in assists per game (6.3).

* The Bothell Reporter wrote about women’s basketball-Taylor Peacocke who propelled her team to an important non-conference victory.

* The Missoulian reported how the Grizzlies’ comeback fell short in the FCS semifinals. That ends the Big Sky Conference’s run in the playoffs.

Sac State Morning Call: Friday Edition

With Finals Week ending one week before Christmas, you’ve got to wonder if Santa Claus was a teacher in a former life. After all, for the Sac State athletes, it’s their professors who will determine if they’re naughty or nice. And losing your eligibility is worse than a lump of coal. Same idea, though. On with links:

In light of our interview with football coach Marshall Sperbeck on Thursday, take a look at this video of Southern Utah this season. Pay close attention to the aerial attack because Sperbeck confirmed he has interviewed SUU passing-game coordinator Paul Peterson for the job of offensive coordinator:

In Hornets-related sports news:

* SacStateSports.com talked to Marshall Sperbeck, who for the first time talked about his search for an offensive coordinator.

* The other big football news out of Sac State yesterday was defensive lineman Zack  Nash was selected to Associated Press’ FCS All-American first team.

* The Davis Enterprise’ Bob Dunning noted a few good quarterbacks on the college free-agent market that Sac State or UC Davis could use.

* The Orange County Register reported that Costa Mesa’ running back  Mario Smith has been offered a football scholarship by the Hornets. Continue Reading →

In Hornets basketball news:

* SacStateSports had the details on the Hornets loss at the buzzer to Cal State-Bakersfield.

Sac State Football: 2011 Season In Review

Sac State Coach Marshall Sperbeck had to make adjustments all season. Photo by Jesse Charlton

By Kyle Madson, SacStateSports Staff Writer

The Sacramento State football team had a difficult year in 2011. For the Hornets it was a season full of ups, downs, good times and bad times.

They started with one of the biggest upsets of the college football season and ended it with the biggest disappointment of their year. They finished 4-7 during a season when fans were starting to make plans for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Now, they’re spending Thanksgiving asking what went wrong.

Let us relive that roller-coaster ride of the season with the best and worst we saw of the Hornets.

TOP FIVE PLAYERS

5. John Hendershott (WR/KR):  Hendershott went out with a bang in his final season with the Hornets, and did so in multiple facets of the game.  As a kick returner, Hendershott thrived.  He returned 31 kicks, averaged 21.5 yards per return and returned one 91 yards for a touchdown at Montana State.  He was also the Hornets’ most consistent force in the receiving game, catching 31 balls for 264 yards. Sacramento State gave up 377 yards in the 23-19 loss to UC Davis on Saturday in the Causeway Classic.

However, in a performance that defense would like to forget, freshman defensive lineman Ben Cowger made a play worth remembering.

Cowger came in a rush early in the second quarter and got UC Davis quarterback Randy Wright in his grasp in the end zone. Before Wright hit the ground, Cowger forced a fumble and then fell on the ball for a touchdown. Continue Reading →

Hilliard To Cap Courageous Career In Causeway Classic

Sac State running back Bryan Hilliard (34) will be playing his final collegiate game today when the Hornets meet the UC Davis Aggies in the Causeway Classic.

By John Parker, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Today, for the final time, Bryan Hilliard will prepare for a football game.

Both ankles, which have made thousands of cuts between practices and games at the pee-wee, high school and collegiate levels, will be taped. Protective cushioning will be slipped over piston-like thighs that have powered the speedy, shifty, yet bruising back through innumerable carries. And pads will be buckled onto two broad, surgically repaired shoulders, mementos from pinball hits taken and blocks thrown.

Hilliard, a fifth-year senior and Sac State’s third all-time leading rusher with 3,482 yards entering the 58th Causeway Classic today at 1:05 p.m., said he approaches every gameday carry, every blitz pick-up, every practice rep like it will be his last. Now that he invariably stares his last game in the face today at Hornet Stadium, he greets the notion with equal parts enthusiasm and relief.

“I’ve had a good career here but, man, my body it hurts sometimes,” Hilliard said after Wednesday night’s practice hunched over on the leather sofa outside of the coaches’ suites in the Broad Athletic Facility. “I don’t think I’ll be playing no more … sometimes you gotta cut your losses. I still want to be able to play with my kids.” Continue Reading →

Sac State Morning Wake-Up Call: Causeway Classic Gameday Edition

Are you ready for some football? Sacramento State and UC Davis better be as we get some matinee football today with the Causeway Classic. And another reminder – it’s a 1:05 p.m. game thanks to CSN CA televising  it, not a 2:05 p.m. no matter what the tickets say. Here are some links to get your Causeway Gameay started:

First our video of the day takes you back to last year’s Causeway, which was won by UC Davis. It included, among other things, a monsoon delay that we shouldn’t see today:

In Hornets football news:

* The Sacramento Bee’s Dave Carpenter wrote that this could be a close matchup.

* The State Hornet had a great interactive timeline of the Causeway Classic. Great idea by their staff.

* The Davis Enterprise’s Bob Dunning takes a mild shot at the Hornets today.

* SacStateSports’ Kyle Madson previewed the game, looking at how this game can be bandaid for both teams.

* The Davis Enterprise also had a preview looking at how a win today would make the Aggies feel better. Continue Reading →
