Lillard’s 21 Points, Mahoney’s First Double-Double Power Wildcats Past Hornets

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

The best players draw the best crowds. When NCAA leading scorer Damian Lillard and the Weber State Wildcats came to town Thursday night they brought in the largest crowd the Sacramento State Hornets have seen at home all season.

Included in that crowd were 10 NBA scouts from nine different teams and a few players such as the Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins.

In front of a crowd of 823, the Wildcats (16-3, 8-0) showed that they have more than just Lillard’s 25.1 points per game as they led start-to-finish in a 75-60 win over the Hornets.

“Everybody’s made a big deal about his scoring,” Hornets’ head coach Brian Katz said. “They’re really a balanced team. He’s very comfortable scoring below his average.” Continue Reading →

Sac State Morning Call: Damian Lillard / Weber State Edition

Yes, we admit it. We’re all Damian Lillard all the time today at SacStateSports.com. Sure, he plays for the visiting team coming into Hornet Gym today, but it’s not often the Hornets have hosted a player this good. And we think we’ll have a few links about him today:

We had an inkling that Lillard would be this good during this his freshman season two years ago. Here’s highlights of that season, 13 minutes worth:

In Hornets-related basketball news:

* SacStateSports.com’s Bryan Metcalf talked to the Hornets about what makes Lillard so good.

* Also, here’s SacStateSport’s preview capsule for tonight’s game.

* The Ogden Standard-Examiner wrote about Lillard returning to his native Northern California (he is from Oakland). Expect a packed gym tonight.

* The Deseret News wrote about how Lillard can become the school’s second-leading scorer tonight.

* Here’s the Sports Network’s preview capsule on the men’s game.

* Here’s the Sacramento State press release on the men’s game.

* Here’s the Sacramento State press release on the women’s weekend of games.

* The State Hornet caught up students on the men’s team while they were gone. Continue Reading →

Lillard Gaining National Notoriety Entering Hornet Gym Tonight

The Sacramento State Hornets will face a tough challenge when Weber State comes to town tonight: NCAA leading scorer Damian Lillard.

A school-record nine NBA scouts have already been confirmed in attendance, including representatives of the Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors. That’s more scouts than Sac State officials can remember credentialing for one game.

It’s all because of the Oakland native, who has blossomed into one of the nation’s best basketball players. He has averaged 25.1 points a game this season, an improvement of more than five points per game from last season. He has complemented those numbers with 3.7 assists and 5.8 rebounds a game.

The Hornets (5-13, 0-7) faced Lillard and the Wildcats (15-3, 7-0) earlier this season, and Hornets Coach Brian Katz was impressed with what he saw from the junior guard.

“He has great intangibles,” Katz said. “His work ethic, shooting, he makes everybody better around him and he’s very physical, aggressive and tough.” Continue Reading →

Dickson scores 20, Hornets fall at Weber State

Compiled from web reports

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Sacramento State had their hands full against Weber State in their final game of 2011 trying to defend NCAA leading scorer Damian Lillard, swingman Scott Bamforth and the inside presence of Kyle Tresnak.

The three combined for 59 points as the Wildcats beat the Hornets for ninth consecutive time, 74-63.

Weber State (10-3, 2-0) never trailed after jumping out to a 15-5 lead.

Just as they did against Northern Arizona, the Hornets (5-8, 0-2) took over the first three minutes of the second half to close the gap to just six with a 9-3 run.

Weber State answered with a short run of their own to get back the double-digit lead.

Every time the Hornets tried to get something started, the Wildcats answered and held on for a 74-63 win.

Lillard, a three-time Big Sky player of the week this season, finished with a game-high 22 points and 9 rebounds. Bamforth had 19 points and Tresnak had 18. No other Wildcat scored more than 4.

John Dickson led the Hornets with 20 points. Joe Eberhard had 15 and Heath Hoffman had 12.

Eberhard and Hoffman both had 7 rebounds to lead Sacramento State. Josh McCarver had 6.

Sacramento State outrebounded the Wildcats 37-29, which is unusual in Hornet losses this season. Entering the game, Sacramento State held a -31 rebounding margin in losses and had only won the battle of the boards three times in those games, all by 3 rebounds or less.

The Hornets are now 1-6 away from the Nest and will be looking forward to returning to their home court, where they are 4-2, for a three-game stretch beginning with Northern Colorado on Dec. 7.
