Crop Of Sac State Recruits Fills Holes, Sets Up Quarterback Battle

Two seasons ago, SilverAndBlueSports.com filmed a profile of former Nevada quarterback Mason Magleby, who was part of the Hornets’ 2012 signing class Wednesday.

Sacramento State added 22 new football players Wednesday on 2012′s opening day of National Letter of Intent. Yet the most important ones to the Hornets’ immediate success may be already on campus.

Of the 22 signees, two of them were transfers from Football Bowl Subdivision schools and have transferred from junior colleges. All six have enrolled and will help the Hornets fill some holes when spring football starts later this semester. Two others also will come from the JC ranks next fall.

“We needed some guys that could help us win now,” Hornets Coach Marshall Sperbeck said Wednesday afternoon. “When you lose a (fullback) Jake Croxdale and (tailback) Bryan Hilliard – guys who have been in the program for awhile – to replace them with A.J. Ellis (from Fresno State) and Ezekiel Graham (from Southwest Junior College) helps us.

“Also, to get another bounce-back (from an FBS school) in quarterback Mason Magleby like we got in Jeff Fleming was huge.” Continue Reading →

Sac State Football: 2011 Season In Review

Sac State Coach Marshall Sperbeck had to make adjustments all season. Photo by Jesse Charlton

By Kyle Madson, SacStateSports Staff Writer

The Sacramento State football team had a difficult year in 2011. For the Hornets it was a season full of ups, downs, good times and bad times.

They started with one of the biggest upsets of the college football season and ended it with the biggest disappointment of their year. They finished 4-7 during a season when fans were starting to make plans for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Now, they’re spending Thanksgiving asking what went wrong.

Let us relive that roller-coaster ride of the season with the best and worst we saw of the Hornets.

TOP FIVE PLAYERS

5. John Hendershott (WR/KR):  Hendershott went out with a bang in his final season with the Hornets, and did so in multiple facets of the game.  As a kick returner, Hendershott thrived.  He returned 31 kicks, averaged 21.5 yards per return and returned one 91 yards for a touchdown at Montana State.  He was also the Hornets’ most consistent force in the receiving game, catching 31 balls for 264 yards. Hornets Can’t Run, Get Run Over In Loss To NAU

Sacramento State couldn’t run the football on offense, and couldn’t stop the run on defense.

The result was a heartbreaking 27-26 Big Sky Conference loss to Northern Arizona on Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.

The Hornets (3-5, 2-4 Big Sky) were coming off a game against Eastern Washington in which they rushed for 313 yards, but just could not get it going on the ground against the Lumberjacks (3-5, 2-4).

The Lumberjacks, on the other hand, ran roughshod thanks to sophomore Zach Bauman. He carried the ball 38 times for a career-high 246 yards of NAU’s 257 rushing yards.  Last year, the Hornets bottled up Bauman for just 30 yards on 10 carries.

“I was hungry (today),” Bauman said. “I couldn’t have another game like (last season).”

The defeat essentially eliminated Sacramento State from any possibility of gaining a postseason berth. The FCS playoffs committee has never selected an at-large team with more than four losses.

Fleming’s Health In Question As Hornets Prepare For Northern Arizona

It may not be known until gametime if the Hornets coaches will call on the combination of Tommy Edwards (No. 14) and Garrett Safron (No. 12) against Northern Arizona on Saturday as senior quarterback Jeff Fleming nurses a leg injury. Photo by Ron Nabity. For more photos, go to nabityphotos.com.

Sacramento State’s football team may be without their starting quarterback again this week.

It remains to be seen who will get the start under center for the Hornets (3-4, 2-3 Big Sky) as they take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (2-5, 1-4) at 6:05pm at Hornet Stadium on Saturday.

Jeff Fleming sat out last week’s game against Eastern Washington nursing an injury to the lower portion of his right leg.

Coach Marshall Sperbeck is holding his cards close to his vest regarding who will get the start. If it isn’t Fleming, Sperbeck will employ a two-quarterback system where both Garrett Safron and Tommy Edwards split time under center like he did in the loss to Eastern Washington last Saturday. Different Quarterbacks Don’t Mean Different Jobs For Hornets Receivers.

Despite an uncertain quarterback situation, the Sacramento State football team’s wide receivers know that their job remains the same.

Heading into Saturday’s home game against the Lumberjacks of Northern Arizona, it is yet to be seen who the Hornets’ starting quarterback will be.  Yet whether it’s Jeff Fleming or the tandem of Garrett Safron and Tommy Edwards, Sac State’s wide receivers take on the same responsibilities.

“My job personally doesn’t change at all with the different quarterbacks,” wide receiver John Hendershott said.  “We have assignments on each different play, and my job is to keep my assignment.  Whoever is in there at quarterback, my job is still the same.”

Yet their jobs did change, depending on the quarterback, at least during last Saturday’s loss to Eastern Washington. Continue Reading →

Sac State Recruiting Update: Could Underclass QB Success Turn Off Prospects?

Eric Ascencio is one of four quarterbacks considering Sacramento State.

If you’re a fan of Sacramento State football, you had to feel good about the future of the program after watching last Saturday’s 42-35 loss to Eastern Washington. But you have to wonder what that loss did for recruiting.

With starter Jeff Fleming nursing a strained calf muscle, freshman Garrett Safron and sophomore transfer Tommy Edwards stepped up to help the Hornets gain 545 yards total offense. Edwards threw for 223 yards and Safron became the first Sac State quarterback to run for 100 yards in a game.

“They’ve only played one game, too,” Coach Marshall Sperbeck said.  “We’ve got to continue to evaluate it. I think it was a good start.”

However, the Hornets are in the hunt for four quarterbacks, according to Rivals.com.While Sperbeck said it is good to know the cupboard isn’t bare, that’ s four quarterbacks who probably looked at Sac State and thought they had legitimate shot at replacing Fleming, a senior who had made 16 consecutive starts prior to the EWU game. Sac State Coach Sperbeck: QB Fleming Gametime Decision Against NAU

Jeff Fleming

Sacramento State football Coach Marshall Sperbeck said Monday that quarterback Jeff Fleming will again be a gametime decision for this week’s game against Northern Arizona.

“We’ll see how he feels,” said Sperbeck after the weekly Quarterback Club luncheon at El Patron restaurant. “It’s not bad. It’s just a pulled muscle that needs treatment.”

The Hornets play host to Northern Arizona at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Fleming suffered a pulled hamstring/calf muscle a week ago Sunday while preparing for the Eastern Washington game, which Sac State lost 42-35 in overtime Saturday.

“He’s getting better every day,” Sperbeck said. “I think he’ll be fine.” Continue Reading →

QB Shuffle Worked For Sac State Despite Loss To Eastern Washington

COMMENTARY

It’s kind of murky when it was determined that quarterback Jeff Fleming would not make his 17th start for Sacramento State.

Coach Marshall Sperbeck said it was a game-time decision. One of Fleming’s understudies said it was determined last Sunday when Fleming got hurt. And the other backup said it was made clear Thursday that Fleming would be out.

Regardless of the timing and regardless of the 42-35 loss Saturday night to Eastern Washington, Sperbeck looked smart in the way he handled Fleming’s absence.

Sperbeck was shuffling quarterbacks in and out of the lineup like cards in a deck. Freshman Garrett Safron, a 6-1, 190-pounder from Santa Monica High took the game’s first snap. On the next play he was relieved by sophomore Tommy Edwards, a 5-11, 180-pounder who transferred from The Citadel. And then Safron. And then Edwards. And then Safron. And then Edwards. Game 7 Second Quarter Update: Sac State 14, Eastern Washington 13

Quarterback Garrett Safron scores his first collegiate touchown on a 14-yard keeper in the second quarter. Photo by Ron Nabity.

Backup quarterback Garrett Safron scored on a quarterback keeper and the defense held two drives to field goals as Sacramento State held a 14-13 lead over Eastern Washington at halftime Saturday night at Hornet Stadium.

Safron was alternating with Tommy Edwards after it was announced at gametime that Jeff Fleming was unable to play because of a calf injury. On second play of the second quarter, Safron dropped back to pass and then ran a quarterback draw play that from 14 yards, running into the end zone untouched to make it 14-7.

The Eagles moved deep into the Hornets’ territory on the next two possessions. However, Sac State stopped Eastern at the 11 on the first drive of the quarter, forcing Eastern’s Mike Jarrett to kick a 28-yard field. That made it 14-1o.

On the next drive, the Hornets stopped Eagles at the 24, forcing Jarrett to kick a 41-yard field goal. That score made it 14-13.

Eagles quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, who won the last two Big Sky Conference player of the week awards, completed 11 of 16 passes for 147 yards. The Hornets duo was 10 of 14 for 105 yards combined.

The Hornets had a chance to extend their lead before halftime. They drove to Eagles’ 15-yard line with 15 seconds left in the half. However, Jason Diniz missed the 32-yard field goal. Diniz has missed four of his five field-goal attempts this season.
