Sac State Inches Closer To Return To FCS Top 25

Despite having the week off, the Sacramento State football took a step toward returning to the Football Championship Subdivision Top 25 media poll Monday.

In the weekly media poll, which is run by the Sports Network, the Hornets moved up two spots among the teams that are  “others receiving votes.” The Hornets (3-3) now rank 30th in voting, still five spots and 366 points behind No. 25 South Dakota.

Sac State plays host to defending FCS national champion Eastern Washington (3-4) on Saturday night.

Oddly, the Big Sky Conference’s best team, Montana State, fell one spot to No. 4 even though it defeated league-foe Northern Arizona University. The Bobcats (6-1), who collected two first-place votes, now sit behind Georgia Southern, Northern Iowa and North Dakota State, which passed Montana State by seven points.

The only other Big Sky school in the poll, Montana (5-2), moved up two spots to No. 12. Future Big Sky member North Dakota (4-2) improved three spots to No. 20.

The poll, administered by The Sports Network, is used as an official tool by the NCAA Division I Football Playoffs Committee for determining the 20-team playoff field.

Sac State On The Board In Sports Network’s FCS Bracket Projection

And you thought “bracketology” was just a term used in the NCAA basketball tournaments.

The Sports Network, which sponsors the weekly Football Championship Subdivision media poll, this week ran its second FCS bracket projection of the season – and Sacramento State was part of it.

However, just because TSN runs the poll, doesn’t mean the poll runs the bracket. The Hornets, who are 3-3 and unranked, are projected by TSN to make the 20-team FCS playoff field. They are predicted to play a first-round game Nov. 26 at McNeese State.

The projected bracket has the winner playing No. 4 seed Wofford. Montana and Montana State are the only two other Big Sky Conference schools predicted to make the field.

The FCS national championship game is scheduled for Jan. 7 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas. The stadium is normally the home of the Major League Soccer FC Dallas.

It’s Official: Sac State Falls Out of FCS Media Poll

Sacramento State, which returned to the FCS media poll last week at No. 25, was knocked back out of the poll Monday following its weekend 31-21 loss at Montana State.

The defeat, which leaves the Hornets with a 2-3 record this season, dropped them to 31st overall with 112 votes, just ahead of Portland State. The poll goes a long way in determining what 20 teams are selected for the NCAA FCS playoffs field, which is selected late next month.

The Big Sky Conference has only two teams  ranked in the Top 25, the first time in at least five years when there weren’t at least three league teams in the Top 25. Montana State moved up one spot to No. 3 and Montana improved three spots to No. 16.

Southern  Utah, which will join the Big Sky next season, fell to No. 22. The Thunderbirds handed Sac State its first loss of the season.
