Hornets Win Second Consecutive Big Sky Game, Defeat UNC

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

Compiled from web reports

GREELEY, Colo. – Just when the Sacramento State Hornets thought they were safely going to close out their second win of the Big Sky conference schedule and snap a seven-game road losing streak, the Northern Colorado Bears did something they hadn’t done most of the game: make free throws.

The Bears (7-14, 4-5) finished the game 39 percent (11-28) from the foul line. Most of that came from going 6-for-8 in the final three minutes when the Hornets already had a 14-point lead.

The 73-62 win snapped Sacramento State’s (7-14, 2-8) seven-game losing streak to the Bears and moved them just two games behind Northern Colorado and Portland State for a fifth-place tie in the Big Sky standings.

With six games remaining in the conference schedule – including two with Portland State – the Hornets have placed themselves into a position to challenge for a berth in the Big Sky tournament. Continue Reading →

Hornets Fall To 0-3 In Big Sky After Losing to Northern Colorado

By Bill Bradley, SacStateSports.com Editor

This wasn’t the script Sacramento State men’s basketball coach Brian Katz had written.

After a tough non-conference schedule, he didn’t plan to start the Big Sky Conference schedule 0-3. Yet that’s exactly the record the Hornets have hanging around their collar after a 61-53 loss to Northern Colorado at Hornet Gym tonight.

“I wouldn’t have been excited about being 0-3,” Katz said. “I thought 0-2 always a possibility (because the Hornets started on the road).

“There have been one, maybe two wins on the road in the Big Sky so far. Big Sky teams typically it’s tough to win on the road because of the travel. But you always try to think, ‘Win all of your home games and split on the road.’ But obviously we haven’t done that.”

The Bears (2-1 in Big Sky, 5-9 overall) did a solid job of ruining Katz’s plans by holding the Hornets (5-9 overall) to 38.8 percent field-goal shooting and 31.8 for three-pointers. Continue Reading →

Sac State Football: 2011 Season In Review

Sac State Coach Marshall Sperbeck had to make adjustments all season. Photo by Jesse Charlton

By Kyle Madson, SacStateSports Staff Writer

The Sacramento State football team had a difficult year in 2011. For the Hornets it was a season full of ups, downs, good times and bad times.

They started with one of the biggest upsets of the college football season and ended it with the biggest disappointment of their year. They finished 4-7 during a season when fans were starting to make plans for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Now, they’re spending Thanksgiving asking what went wrong.

Let us relive that roller-coaster ride of the season with the best and worst we saw of the Hornets.

TOP FIVE PLAYERS

5. John Hendershott (WR/KR):  Hendershott went out with a bang in his final season with the Hornets, and did so in multiple facets of the game.  As a kick returner, Hendershott thrived.  He returned 31 kicks, averaged 21.5 yards per return and returned one 91 yards for a touchdown at Montana State.  He was also the Hornets’ most consistent force in the receiving game, catching 31 balls for 264 yards. Big Sky Conference Picks: Week 11

We’re one week from the Big Sky Conference Game of the Century – well, sort of.

With no Montana and Montana State on the schedule until they meet in eight days, this week’s picks are going to be a tough call. We won’t try to match last week’s perfect record, but we won’t go out on many limbs, either.

Then again, our record isn’t usually this good over an entire season, so we’re ready for this to be an 0-4 week.

That said, there’s some pretty tough games to call. Lets’ dive in.

The numbers:Last week 4-0; The season: 37-15. Continue Reading →

Big Sky Conference Football Picks: Week 10

Last week was our worst Saturday on Big Sky Conference picks since the opening weekend back in August.

The big mistake was taking Weber State over Montana, which won 45-10. The smart bet is to let the Montana schools ride for two more games until they play the Big Sky game of the year. After all, both Montana and Montana State have all but locked up FCS playoff spots, which won’t go to any other Big Sky schools.

Until then, we’re taking the safe call – or at least ones that make sense. And, unfortunately for Sac State, that means picking against them in Portland on Saturday.

Remember, these selections are for entertainment purposes only. Continue Reading →

SacStateSports’ Big Sky Conference Picks: Week 9

With an odd number of teams in the Big Sky Conference, you’re more than likely to get a non-conference game each week.

Somehow, those games haven’t been as close as they were the first weekend of the season when Sacramento State defeated Oregon State and Eastern Washington and Weber State came within a field goal of big upsets.

Maybe its because the rest of the country wised up to how good the Big Sky can  be  or maybe the Big Sky has beat up on itself too much.

Regardless, this week’s non-conference game feels like a conference game. Northern Colorado will play host to North Dakota, which joins the league next season. This one will be a blowout, but it will give you a glimpse of how good UND will be in the league next season.

That is, unless the logo controversy turns off the Big Sky presidents so much that they pull back the invitation. On to the picks. Continue Reading →

Big Sky Football Picks: Week 8

The buzz around the Big Sky Conference this week is BYU Coach Bronco Mendenhall complaining that his Cougars have to play an FCS team so late in the season.

Say what? Why is he moaning about this when it’s his own school’s fault. After all, BYU decided last year to go independent in football and had to go trolling for opponents because it had alienated its Mountain West Conference brethren. Shouldn’t he be complaining to his athletic director, who had to create the schedule on the fly.

Regardless, BYU will win this one big, but Mendenhall’s words make you root for the Bengals. A BYU victory would make the Cougars look like sore winners.

Here’s our complete lineup of picks: Continue Reading →
