Hornets Winning Streak Ends At Home Against Montana

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

In front of their second largest home crowd this season, the Sacramento State Hornets fell short of a school record tying five-game winning streak.

Sacramento State squandered at five-point halftime lead to fall 67-58 to the visiting Montana Grizzlies in front of an announced crowd of 818 Saturday night at The Nest.

“I thought we really competed,” Coach Brian Katz said. “We just got in trouble first with their press and then their zone.”

The Hornets (9-15, 4-9) were simply outmatched by the Grizzlies (19-6, 12-1), who extended their winning streak to eight games and tied their own school record for best start in the Big Sky Conference.

Back-to-back baskets in the first minute of play by Art Steward and Kareem Jamar for Montana seemed to set the tone for a repeat performance of the Grizzlies’ blowout win over the Hornets earlier this season. Continue Reading →

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

MISSOULA, Mont. – For the second year in a row the Sacramento State Hornets have opened the Big Sky Conference 0-7.

The Hornets (5-13, 0-7) latest loss, 85-56 at Montana Saturday night, was the result of not being able to get shots to fall or to get stops against the Grizzlies (13-6, 6-1).

It was just the second time during Sacramento State’s current losing streak that they lost by double-digits, and only the third blowout loss for the Hornets all season.

Montana shot 65 percent (13-20) from the field and went 15-for-16 from the foul line in the first half to build a 43-29 lead despite allowing the Hornets to grab four offensive rebounds. Continue Reading →

Sac State Football: 2011 Season In Review

Sac State Coach Marshall Sperbeck had to make adjustments all season. Photo by Jesse Charlton

By Kyle Madson, SacStateSports Staff Writer

The Sacramento State football team had a difficult year in 2011. For the Hornets it was a season full of ups, downs, good times and bad times.

They started with one of the biggest upsets of the college football season and ended it with the biggest disappointment of their year. They finished 4-7 during a season when fans were starting to make plans for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Now, they’re spending Thanksgiving asking what went wrong.

Let us relive that roller-coaster ride of the season with the best and worst we saw of the Hornets.

TOP FIVE PLAYERS

5. John Hendershott (WR/KR):  Hendershott went out with a bang in his final season with the Hornets, and did so in multiple facets of the game.  As a kick returner, Hendershott thrived.  He returned 31 kicks, averaged 21.5 yards per return and returned one 91 yards for a touchdown at Montana State.  He was also the Hornets’ most consistent force in the receiving game, catching 31 balls for 264 yards. Big Sky Now Has No. 1 FCS Team: Montana State

The Big Sky Conference can now boast having the top team in the Football Championship Subdivision.

The Montana State Bobcats moved into No. 1 in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll without playing Saturday. The 9-1 Bobcats moved up one spot and took over the top spot thanks to North Dakota State’s first loss of the season.

Montana State has a 41-point lead over Sam Houston State and received 76 first-place votes. Rival Montana (8-2), which also was idle, moved up one spot to No. 7.

The Montana schools meet this Saturday for the 111th time. Both schools are expected to qualify for the 20-team FCS playoffs field.

The Big Sky also has a third team in the Top 25 poll for the first time since Sac State fell out last month. Portland State (7-3) squeaked in at No. 25 ahead of Indiana State, keeping its playoffs hopes alive. The Vikings finish their regular season this Saturday when they host  Weber State.

Here’s the complete poll: Continue Reading →

Big Sky Conference Picks: Week 11

We’re one week from the Big Sky Conference Game of the Century – well, sort of.

With no Montana and Montana State on the schedule until they meet in eight days, this week’s picks are going to be a tough call. We won’t try to match last week’s perfect record, but we won’t go out on many limbs, either.

Then again, our record isn’t usually this good over an entire season, so we’re ready for this to be an 0-4 week.

That said, there’s some pretty tough games to call. Lets’ dive in.

The numbers:Last week 4-0; The season: 37-15. Continue Reading →
