Record night for Garrity powers Hornets to fourth-straight win

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

Two weeks ago the Sacramento State Hornets men’s basketball team had lost nine straight games and it looked like a season that started out as one of the best in school history was destined for a disappointing end.

One problem: someone forgot to tell the Hornets.

Sacramento State defeated Montana State 86-76 Thursday night at the Nest to win their season-high fourth-straight game on a record-setting night for point guard Dylan Garrity.

Garrity dished out 16 assists, the most in a Big Sky game in 21 seasons.

“We’ve got more confidence coming off these wins,” junior swingman Joe Eberhard said. “We started playing a full 40 minutes where before we would have one good half and one bad half.”

The four-game winning streak is the best since the Hornets (9-14, 4-8) won five in a row from Dec. 29, 2005 – Jan. 14, 2006 and ties last season’s conference win total with only four games to play. Continue Reading →

Big Sky Conference Picks: Week 12 / Rivalry Weekend

Give the Big Sky Conference credit. The people there get it. They have gotten out of the way and put allowed six schools close in proximity to play rivalry games.

Now NAU and Southern Utah may not be rivals now, but they will be next season when the Thunderbirds join the league. And Montana-Montana State is the biggest league rival.

But the Big Sky will strike gold next season when UC Davis joins the Big Sky and makes  its 58-year rivalry with Sac State a conference game. That will put even more importance on a game that previously has just been about pride. Now it will be an important league game, too.

That said, Big Sky needs to make its biggest rivalry games are played in Week 12.  It allows for a build up if a playoffs spot is at stake and creates renewed interest both teams are playing out the schedule, like Sac State and UC Davis.

The numbers:Last week 3-1; The season: 40-16. Here’s our picks:

Big Sky Now Has No. 1 FCS Team: Montana State

The Big Sky Conference can now boast having the top team in the Football Championship Subdivision.

The Montana State Bobcats moved into No. 1 in The Sports Network FCS Top 25 poll without playing Saturday. The 9-1 Bobcats moved up one spot and took over the top spot thanks to North Dakota State’s first loss of the season.

Montana State has a 41-point lead over Sam Houston State and received 76 first-place votes. Rival Montana (8-2), which also was idle, moved up one spot to No. 7.

The Montana schools meet this Saturday for the 111th time. Both schools are expected to qualify for the 20-team FCS playoffs field.

We’re one week from the Big Sky Conference Game of the Century – well, sort of.

With no Montana and Montana State on the schedule until they meet in eight days, this week’s picks are going to be a tough call. We won’t try to match last week’s perfect record, but we won’t go out on many limbs, either.

That said, there’s some pretty tough games to call. Lets’ dive in.
