It’s a morning with breakfast tacos made by a little kid. It was full of eggs just like this post is full of links:
As former Folsom High quarterback Cary Grossart has a homecoming today when he leads Northern Arizona into Hornet Stadium to play Sac State, here’s a memory of what he was like with the Bulldogs.
In Hornets football news:
* FoxSports Arizona wrote about Grossart coming back to Sacramento to play Sac State.
This is a little late start for the Wake-Up Call, but we’ll still have links for lunch. Take a look:
We’re not sure who will start in goal for the Sac State men’s soccer team against No. 2- ranked New Mexico today in Albuquerque, but if they go with Cesar Castillo there will be some exciting saves. Here’s a highlight reel from last year of Castillo’s work as freshmen. This season he has nine starts.
In Hornets football news:
* SacStateSports’ Kyle Madson reported in his preview that if quarterback Jeff Fleming will start again will be game-time decision.
* The Sac State-NAU game is mentioned in the Big Sky Conference’s weekend viewing guide
The Sacramento State Hornets football team has a bye today, but we still have football for breakfast at SacStateSports.com. We’ve got an early start with heaping helpings:
Today’s video is from the Big Sky Conference, which featured Hornets linebacker Todd Davis as one of its Players of the Week.
In Hornets football and basketball related news:
* In The Sports Network’s weekly Inside the FCS Huddle, Sac State’s Ryan McMahon is listed as one of the key FCS transfers this season. He came to the Hornets from USC.
* SacStateSports’ Kyle Madson featured the Hornets’ training staff, which may be the busiest people during the football bye week.

It’s time to wake up to the fact that this is one of those must-win games for the Hornets today at Northern Colorado. Win and they keep their hopes alive. Lose and it would be tough for the NCAA selection committee to let them in – even with a 7-4 record – with a loss like this on their resume.
Today’s game is going to be rainy and muddy with 70 percent chance of precipitation and temperatures below 50 degrees. That means it’s going to be up to tailback Brian Hilliard to lead the Hornets. Today’s video shows how he did it against Montana a two weeks ago:
It’s been a week since the Hornets upset Montana at home. Let’s see if they can beat Montana State on the road and sweep the state.
First, our video of the day. We introduce you to the game who makes the Bobcats offense run. That’s Denarius McGhee, the Big Sky freshman of the year who is having an other standout season. Here is an interview after the first preseason scrimmage:
What they’re saying about the game:
* The Sacramento Bee’s Dave Carpenter asked if today’s game can match last year’s 64-61 overtime shootout won by Montana State.
It’s Tuesday, which means it takes a few more shots of espresso to charged up for the day because, well, there’s five days until the next football game. Yet we’ve cooked a few links to get you through the morning.
First, as if you’ve forgotten, here’s Sac State’s highlight video from its victory last Saturday over Montana:
What they wrote today:
* Speaking of that Montana loss, The Missoulian wrote about how the loss to Sac State dropped the Grizzlies in the polls.
* SacStateSports.com had a report from the Quarterback Luncheon with Coach Marshall Sperbeck saying his coaches show is back on the air.
* The Sacramento Bee’s Dave Carpenter had a feature on running back Bryan Hilliard and how he might have a tough time putting up big rushing numbers against Montana State. Continue Reading →
This happened last summer, but it’s too good not to recap with Sacramento State visiting Montana State this Saturday.
The Bobcats had a better than average recruit in Connor Thomas, a 4.0 student from Flathead High School in Kalispell, Mont. He was an honorable mention all-state football player and one of the school’s valedictorians.
However, he also had a slight drug problem, according to a report in The Missoulian. He had been suspended for two games for being caught in a car with drug paraphernalia. But what happened in June took the cake, er, brownies. Continue Reading →
Sorry this is late. We slept in. Went out for a ham steak for breakfast. But now it’s time to eat up the links:
Today’s video is from Montana State, which is the Hornets’ next opponent. It promotes the Bobcats’ motto: “Leave no question.”
First the football stories:
* My good friend Victor Contreras wrote today’s Leading Off column in the Sacramento Bee with a few bullet points on the Hornets.
* In case you missed it, Bill Bradley of SacStateSports wrote about how this season’s football schedule makes it tough for the Hornets to sell tickets, win or lose.
* The Missoulian’s analysis of Montana’s loss found that Sac State made all of the big plays.
* The Bozeman Daily Chronicle reported that Montana State coach was pleased with what he saw in the Bobcats’ victory over Eastern Washington. He may be the first coach to be that happy with a win.
* The Bozeman paper also reported that the Bobcats-Hornets game is nearly sold out. (The link has worked off and on today.)
* Remember the first team to beat Sac State, Southern Utah? The Utah Sports Examiner reported the Thunderbirds have arrived after beating FBS school UNLV.
* In our daily Oregon State link, The Bleacher Report dissected its schedule and noted the Hornets’ first victim could go winless this season.
* And the Natomas Buzz wrote a feature on the Inderkum High marching band playing at halftime of the Hornets’ victory over Montana on Saturday (lots of photos).
In other sports:
* LA Soccer News told the story of the men’s soccer team’s 2-0 loss to UC Santa Barbara.
Later today on SacStateSports:
*We’ll have the latest FCS media and coaches poll. Will the Hornets be ranked again? And how high will the next opponent, Montana State move up?
* A report from Coach Marshall Sperbeck’s Quarterback Luncheon for boosters.
* And the Big Sky Conference player of the week honors. Will Bryan Hilliard win it for his 16th 100-yard rushing game over Montana?
Now that you’ve recovered – or maybe not – from the Hornets’ first victory in 17 tries against Montana, it’s time to recap the coverage of this and all things Sac State.
First of all, we have more than 200 photos available from last night’s game to browse and purchase by photographer Ron Nabity. Click here to go to his gallery at www.nabityphotos.com.
What are they writing today about the Hornets’ victory?
* SacStateSports’ game story looked at how the Hornets have changed the culture in five years under Coach Marshall Sperbeck.
* SacStateSports’ Bill Bradley wrote a commentary about Jeff Fleming and he came out of his two-game hibernation just in time.
We’ve loaded up with a few carbs, a big omelette and lots of java. Now we’re ready to see if the Hornets will have bear meat for dinner as they play Montana at Hornet Stadium tonight.
First, here’s what happened when these team played last year in Missoula, Mont. Let’s just say there were bugs on the Grizzlies’ windshield.
* Our weekly reference to Sac State’s upset of Oregon State comes from TCU’s Gary Patterson, whose team is preparing for the Big Sky’s Portland State.
* And on Friday KEZI in Oregon reported Oregon State’s fans are still blaming Sac State for their awful season (shouldn’t they blame their coach or the players?). You’ve got to see this quote: “Sac state really sucks, so that’s pretty embarrassing to be honest, I’m embarrassed to be a beaver right now,” said Clancy Smith, OSU student.
