POCATELLO, Idaho – Joe Eberhard made sure his first season at Sacramento State would end with a bang.

With 1.3 seconds left, the junior transfer from Irvine Valley JC nailed a three-pointer to give the Hornets a 70-67 victory over the Bengals of Idaho State.

In what was almost a complete opposite of the first meeting between the two teams, the Bengals (9-19, 7-8) led for the entire first half and well into the second. Continue Reading →

Portland State Ends Hornets Men’s Playoff Hopes

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

Damien Lillard and Will Cherry are arguably the top guards in the Big Sky Conference, but the Sacramento State Hornets were able to at least make life difficult when they brought their respective teams to town.

That wasn’t the case Thursday night against Charles Odum and the Portland State Vikings.

Odum recorded a game and career-high 38 points in 36 minutes for the Vikings as Portland State ended the Hornets playoff hopes with a 94-88 victory at The Nest.

“We couldn’t guard him,” Coach Brian Katz said. “That was the difference in the game.” Continue Reading →

Carbajal scores career-high 24; Hornets fall in ESPN BracketBuster

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

Neither Jackson Carbajal’s career-high 24 points nor Dylan Garrity’s third career double-double was enough for the Sacramento State Hornets in their Sears ESPN BracketBuster against San Jose State.

The Spartans, who scrimmaged the Hornets before the season began, came back from a 12-point deficit to win 79-67 Saturday night in Sacramento.

“I thought we did a good job containing their penetration in the first half,” head coach Brian Katz said. “The second half they got in the lane.”

Katz said playing against San Jose State’s (9-17, 1-9 WAC) Wil Carter created a dilemma for the Hornets (9-17, 4-10 Big Sky) because his players aren’t as big and athletic as those in the Spartans’ conference.

Sacramento State was forced to double team Carter in the low post, which left the perimeter open and allowed San Jose State’s guard to drive the lane.

The Spartans scored seven of the game’s first nine points.

Sacramento State responded with a seven-minute, 15-0 run to take the lead.

Carbajal extended the gap to 11 twice; first with a three at 9:34 and again with a foul shot on a three-point play at 8:20.

The Spartans chipped away in short spurts and closed the gap to 37-31 at the half.

Carbajal led all scorers at the break with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting while Garrity had seven assists.

“We thought that’s how he would play this year,” Katz said. “He missed from the first minute of the first game until the first league game, so it took some time.”

The Hornets opened the second half with a 9-3 run to extend the lead to 12 with 16:05 remaining. All three points for San Jose State were free throws.

The game changed dramatically after that, however, as the Spartans came alive with a 16-2 run to retake the lead 50-48 with under 11 minutes left.

Sacramento State fought back to tie the game at 59, but a 10-0 run over a two minute span gave San Jose State the lead with 5:48 left.

The Spartans answered every Hornet basket down the stretch to secure the victory. A layup by James Kinney with 26 seconds left put the exclamation point on the night.

San Jose State shot 68.2 percent (15-22) from the field – including 6-for-7 from three – in the second half after opening the game just 3-for-12 in the first eight minutes.

Kinney and Wil Carter scored a team-high 19 for San Jose State, with 11 of Carter’s points coming in the second half.

Carter also recorded a game-high eight rebounds while Kinney picked up seven.

Garrity finished with 10 points and a game-high 12 assists. Joe Eberhard also had 10 points for Sacramento State.

John Dickson added 15 points off the bench for the Hornets.

“I felt like we needed a little punch coming off the bench,” Katz said.

Dickson said that he feels comfortable with his role, especially because of the chemistry that has developed among the starters.

Sacramento State now has two games remaining as they try to chase down the final spot in the Big Sky tournament.

“I like to put the pressure on the guys to figure that out,” Katz said. “If you don’t win it doesn’t matter.”

Dickson said the team has to get back to practice and find ways to improve and finish the season strong.

“There’s always places you can improve,” Dickson said.

Hornets win 3rd straight; snap 15-game losing streak at Eastern Washington

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com

Compiled from web reports

CHENEY, Wash. – Last week the Sacramento State Hornets were 0-8 in Big Sky Conference play and it seemed like all hopes of a playoff berth were gone.

With three wins in a row, the latest being a 75-71 win at Eastern Washington Saturday night, the Hornets (8-14, 3-8) now sit only two games out of the tournament.

Joe Eberhard (21) and John Dickson (20) combined for 41 points to lead Sacramento State, who never trailed against the Eagles (11-13, 5-6).The Hornets opened up a 19-point lead at the half shooting 50 percent from both the field (14-28) and beyond the arc (6-12).

Saturday’s game marked not only the third-straight win for Sacramento State – their longest winning streak of the season – but also was the third consecutive game in which the Hornets snapped a losing streak of some form.

This time it was a 15-game losing streak at Eastern Washington. Sacramento State had not beaten the Eagles in Cheney since Jan. 19, 1995.

Lillard’s 21 Points, Mahoney’s First Double-Double Power Wildcats Past Hornets

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

The best players draw the best crowds. When NCAA leading scorer Damian Lillard and the Weber State Wildcats came to town Thursday night they brought in the largest crowd the Sacramento State Hornets have seen at home all season.

Included in that crowd were 10 NBA scouts from nine different teams and a few players such as the Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins.

In front of a crowd of 823, the Wildcats (16-3, 8-0) showed that they have more than just Lillard’s 25.1 points per game as they led start-to-finish in a 75-60 win over the Hornets.

“Everybody’s made a big deal about his scoring,” Hornets’ head coach Brian Katz said. “They’re really a balanced team. He’s very comfortable scoring below his average.” Continue Reading →

Hornets Fall To Eastern Washington, Remain Winless In Big Sky

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

It wasn’t the way many envisioned the season going for the Sacramento State Hornets. After opening the year 5-5 the Hornets have lost five straight including four Big Sky Conference contests.

The latest loss, a 65-60 final against Eastern Washington Thursday night at The Nest, was especially heartbreaking.

“Both teams played hard,” Jackson Carbajal said. “They just made shots at the end. We kept fighting but it just didn’t go our way.”

The Hornets (5-10, 0-4) surrendered the first seven points of the game before they finally got on the board with a Konner Veteto layup over two minutes in. Continue Reading →

Dickson scores 20, Hornets fall at Weber State

Compiled from web reports

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Sacramento State had their hands full against Weber State in their final game of 2011 trying to defend NCAA leading scorer Damian Lillard, swingman Scott Bamforth and the inside presence of Kyle Tresnak.

The three combined for 59 points as the Wildcats beat the Hornets for ninth consecutive time, 74-63.

Weber State (10-3, 2-0) never trailed after jumping out to a 15-5 lead.

Just as they did against Northern Arizona, the Hornets (5-8, 0-2) took over the first three minutes of the second half to close the gap to just six with a 9-3 run.

Weber State answered with a short run of their own to get back the double-digit lead.

Every time the Hornets tried to get something started, the Wildcats answered and held on for a 74-63 win.

Lillard, a three-time Big Sky player of the week this season, finished with a game-high 22 points and 9 rebounds. Bamforth had 19 points and Tresnak had 18. No other Wildcat scored more than 4.

John Dickson led the Hornets with 20 points. Joe Eberhard had 15 and Heath Hoffman had 12.

Eberhard and Hoffman both had 7 rebounds to lead Sacramento State. Josh McCarver had 6.

Sacramento State outrebounded the Wildcats 37-29, which is unusual in Hornet losses this season. Entering the game, Sacramento State held a -31 rebounding margin in losses and had only won the battle of the boards three times in those games, all by 3 rebounds or less.

The Hornets are now 1-6 away from the Nest and will be looking forward to returning to their home court, where they are 4-2, for a three-game stretch beginning with Northern Colorado on Dec. 7.

Hornets Come Up Short At Foul Line, Open Big Sky With Loss At NAU

Compiled from Web TV and internet reports

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

The Sacramento State Hornets entered Thursday’s game with Northern Arizona having converted on 71 percent of their free throw attempts for the season (154-217). Against the Lumberjacks, however, they converted on only 38 percent (8-21).

That margin cost them a victory in their Big Sky opening game of the 2011-12 season. For the 14th consecutive time the Hornetslost at Northern Arizona, this time by a final score of 73-64.

The Hornets (5-7, 0-1) trailed by 13 at the break, but opened the second half on a 14-2 run that tied the game at 42 just under six minutes in. Continue Reading →

Garrity Posts First Double-Double, But Hornets Fall To SEMO

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Dylan Garrity’s first career double-double wasn’t enough.

Despite Garrity’s heroics, the Sacramento State men’s basketball team came up short against Southeast Missouri State Thursday night, losing 77-76 at home in their final game before starting Big Sky Conference play next week.

Lucas Nutt made the first of two free-throw attempts with 3.3 seconds left to give the Redhawks (5-7) the lead with and then the Hornets (5-6) called their final timeout. When Nutt seemed to deliberately miss the second shot, John Dickson attempted a buzzer-beater from behind half court that was well short.

The Hornets (5-6) had no answer for the Redhawks long-range shooting. Southeast Missouri finished the game shooting 48 percent (12-25) from three-point range, most of that damage being done in the first half.

Hornets head coach Brian Katz said he wouldn’t have believed it if someone told him his team would lose because of three-point defense. Continue Reading →
