Sac State Women Beat CSUB In Another Home-Court Comeback

By John Parker, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Home, sweet Hornet’s Nest.

After a rough four-game road stretch over the past 2 1/2 weeks that included one victory, the Sac State women’s basketball team returned to its own cozy confines. Once again, it staged a valiant comeback on the home floor, dispatching Cal State Bakersfield 87-84.

Sophomore guard Alle Moreno, who has had a hand in the Hornets’ two previous home comebacks, once again came through in the clutch, picking Roadrunners guard Amber Williams’ pocket at the top of the key with seven seconds left, a null shot clock and a one point lead.

Moreno took two dribbles down court before alertly stopping, secured the ball with both arms and waited for the imminent intentional foul, rather than risk coughing the ball up – something that haunted the Hornets early on. She calmly drilled two free throws, setting up Sac State’s final defensive stand.

The Hornets (5-7) erased second-half deficits of 14 and 11 points, by ratcheting up the defense and tightening their grasp on the basketball, both areas that allowed short-handed Bakersfield to more than stay in the game. Continue Reading →

Young Hornet Women’s Hoops Off To Best Start In 6 Years

By John Parker, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Jamie Craighead’s young Hornets have begun to take flight.

Jamie Craighead

The Hornets (4-3), utilizing a swarming, aggressive defense and lethal fast break, have won four straight and are off to their best start since the 2005-06 season with a decidedly young starring cast.

They get a good first midterm exam today facing the reigning Big West Conference champion UC Davis (5-2), which coming off its first two losses of the season, at the Davis Pavilion at 2 p.m. Though they do it in different ways, the Aggies also utilize athleticism and make their games more resemble a track meet with a choking full-court pressure defense.

“A lot of people think women’s basketball is a little too slow and a little boring. Well, this isn’t going to be boring; it’s not gonna be slow,” Craighead said. “They get after it, we get after it and this will be a fun game to watch.” Continue Reading →

Sac State Women Hold Off Fresno Pacific, Match 2010-11 Win Total

By Miranda Prado, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Despite missing leading scorer Kylie Kuhns in spurts with  foul trouble, the Sacramento State women’s basketball team rolled to a 98-87 victory over Fresno Pacific on Thursday night at Hornet Gym.

The victory matched Sac State’s win total for all of last season. It also gave Sac State a winning record (4-3) for the first time this late into the season since Dec. 12, 2005. Ironically, that was after a win against the rival UC Davis Aggies, whom the Hornets play on Sunday.

Kuhns still scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 22 minutes. Two questionable fouls forced Kylie Kuhns to the bench early in the second half.  Continue Reading →

Sac State Women Drop Season Opener To Fullerton

By Miranda Prado, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Lauren Chow scored 15 points and Mya Olivier grabbed 15 rebounds as Cal State-Fullerton handed Sacramento State a season-opening 81-64 defeat at Hornet Gym on Friday night.

The loss marked the Hornets’ third consecutive defeat by Fullerton. Last year the Hornets lost at Fullerton 100-74.

Although Fullerton outrebounded Sac State 56-32, Hornets Coach Craighead said one of the main reasons for the loss was that they shot 34 percent from the field.

“Twenty offensive rebounds is a lot (by Fullerton). The fact that we shot the ball so poorly and we really played on our toes (hurt us),” Craighead said. “I thought 23 turnovers by us was just a little too many.” Continue Reading →

Sac State Morning Wake-Up Call: Monday Edition

Football’s back this week for the Hornets, which means we’ve got lots of goodies coming your way this week. And with four home games in the next five weeks, the Hornets own their destiny.

Today’s video featured Eastern Washington’s celebration in the NCAA FCS title game. The Eagles, this week’s opponent for Sac State, is only 10 months removed from winning a national championship. You can learn a lot from watching another team celebrate.

In Hornets football/basketball news:

* SacStateSports contributor Miranda Prado had a feature on coach Jamie Craighead as the women’s basketball team continues its preseason practices.

* Chances are Sacramento State’s Hornet Stadium hosted its last UFL Sacramento Mountain Lions game. The Omaha World-Herald reported the league has cut the season short by two games, with the Mountain Lions volunteering to play a “third-place game” at Omaha on Friday night.

* Later today we’ll have the two polls and the Big Sky honors. There’s no QB Luncheon today coming off the bye, so no news from El Patron.

In other football-related news:

* The FCS’ leading scorer and the Big Sky Conference’s top rusher, Cory McCaffrey may be out for the season. The Sports Network reported McCaffrey sustained an ankle injury that may sideline him for the rest of the season. The Hornets visit Portland State in three weeks.

* Our Oregon State Whine of the Day came from the Salem Statesman-Journal, where columnist James Day speculated that the Beavers will not be favored to win another game all year.

In other Hornets sports news:

* The Mountain Democrat had a blurb on Anna Schoener in it’s daily “Under the Scoreboard” feature. SacStateSports’ John Parker had an in-depth feature on her last week.

* The women’s soccer team played to a draw for the second consecutive game, going 0-0.

* The men’s soccer team dropped a 2-0 match at Seattle U.

* The men’s golf team competes in the Bill Cullum Invitational in Simi Valley beginning today.
