Big Sky Conference Picks: Week 12 / Rivalry Weekend

Give the Big Sky Conference credit. The people there get it. They have gotten out of the way and put allowed six schools close in proximity to play rivalry games.

Now NAU and Southern Utah may not be rivals now, but they will be next season when the Thunderbirds join the league. And Montana-Montana State is the biggest league rival.

But the Big Sky will strike gold next season when UC Davis joins the Big Sky and makes  its 58-year rivalry with Sac State a conference game. That will put even more importance on a game that previously has just been about pride. Now it will be an important league game, too.

That said, Big Sky needs to make its biggest rivalry games are played in Week 12.  It allows for a build up if a playoffs spot is at stake and creates renewed interest both teams are playing out the schedule, like Sac State and UC Davis.

The numbers:Last week 3-1; The season: 40-16. Here’s our picks:

In his first game where he played a majority of the offensive snaps, freshman quarterback Garrett Safron shined when it mattered most.

The Hornets (4-6 Overall, 3-5 Big Sky) overcame some early mistakes to come away with a 24-9 victory over the Idaho State Bengals (2-8, 1-6) on Saturday night at Hornet Stadium on a night when defensive lineman Zack Nash set a school record for sacks.

With starting quarterback Jeff Fleming out with a concussion, Garrett Safron was given the reigns to the Hornets’ offense.  Coach Marshall Sperbeck abandoned the two-quarterback system that he had used in previous games in which Fleming was unavailable. Continue Reading →

Nash, Defensive Line Come Through When Hornets Needed Them Most

COMMENTARY

By Bill Bradley, SacStateSports.com Editor

On a night that Sacramento State’s football team would face a pass-happy offense, the Hornets badly needed their defensive line to step up to the challenge.

The defensive line not only carried the day in Sac State’s 24-9 victory over Idaho State on Saturday night at Hornet Stadium, the pass rush exceeded expectations.

Consider that:

* Senior defensive lineman Zach Nash had five sacks, doubling his total for the entire season. That gave him 29. 5 for his Sac State career, setting the school career sacks record with one game to go.

* Linebacker Jeff Badger had two sacks, two more than he had all season.

* The defense had 10 total sacks, tying a school record for most sacks in a game since Sac State moved to NCAA Division I status 21 years ago.

* The harassment held the Bengals to 200 yards total offense, 140.8 yards below their season average.

* And it marked the first time since 1994 the Hornets have held two teams to less than 10 points in a game in the same season.

It’s amazing how good this defense was after being so abused by offenses all season.

Sac State Ends Losing Streak 24-9 Behind Safron, Nash

Garrett Safron threw for a touchdown and ran for another and Zack Nash had five sacks, helping Sacramento State defeat Idaho State 24-9 at Hornet Stadium on Saturday night.

The victory snapped the Hornets’ three-game losing streak entering their rivalry game next Saturday against UC Davis.

Nash’s five sacks helped him set the Sac State career record (29.5). The team also tied a school record with 10 sacks in game.

The low score was indicative of a game that was full of oddities. It started with the Hornets fumbling on a reverse kickoff return. It keep rolling with two incomplete passes on fake punts by Idaho State and two fumbles lost by Safron in the first half.

Safron started in place of Jeff Fleming, who suffered a concussion in last Saturday’s game at Portland State. Safron played the entire first half rather than swapping snaps with sophomore Tommy Edwards. Edwards started the second half, but Safron got the majority of the playing time.

Safron gave the Hornets the lead for good when he ran 34 yards on a fourth-down-and-two with 3:27 left in the third quarter. The Bengals bit on the fake and Safron ran untouched into the end zone. The freshman then threw to Morris Norrise for the two-point conversion, giving Sac State at 16-9 lead.

The Hornets sealed the game with 2:34 left when tailback Brian Hilliard ran 3 yards for a touchdown and then ran for the two-point conversion. The score was set up by a 40-yard sideline pass from Safron to John Hendershott.

The Bengals had taken a 9-8 lead with 6:37 left in the third quarter on Brian Garcia’s third field goal, a 23-yarder. In the first half, Garcia made a 29-yarder and a 32-yarder.

The Hornets’ only score  in the first half was Safron’s 5-yard touchdown pass to DJ Maciel in the back of the end zone. Safron also connected with T.J. Knowles for the two-point conversion, giving Sac State an 8-3 lead.

Sac State Leads Idaho State At Halftime

The Sacramento State Hornets football team owned an 8-6 lead at halftime tonight of an odd football game at Hornet Stadium.

The Big Sky Conference game has featured two incomplete passes on fake punts by Idaho State and two fumbles lost by Hornets freshman quarterback Garrett Safron – all after Sac State fumbled the opening kickoff on a botched reverse.

Safron started in place of Jeff Fleming, who is still nursing a calf injury. Safron played the entire first half rather than swapping snaps with sophomore Tommy Edwards.

Idaho State opened the scoring after settling for Brendan Garcia’s 29-yard field after the botched kickoff return.

The Hornets 1o minutes later with Safron hitting DJ Maciel for a 5-yard touchdown pass in the back of the end zone. Safron also connected with T.J. Knowles for the two-point conversion, giving Sac State an 8-3 lead.

Idaho State’s other field goal, a 32-yarder by Garcia, came after the Bengals could not score a touchdown following Safron’s second lost fumble.
