Sac State Morning Call: Would You Believe 3 In A Row Edition?

Let’s get this straight: The men’s basketball team that lost nine in a row is on a three-game winning streak? And it hadn’t won on the road since it won at UC Davis (is a 20-minute drive really a road game?), but swept games at Northern Colorado and Eastern Washington? The only problem is they only have three more league home games to go. Here’s some links:

Hornets win 3rd straight; snap 15-game losing streak at Eastern Washington

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com

Compiled from web reports

CHENEY, Wash. – Last week the Sacramento State Hornets were 0-8 in Big Sky Conference play and it seemed like all hopes of a playoff berth were gone.

With three wins in a row, the latest being a 75-71 win at Eastern Washington Saturday night, the Hornets (8-14, 3-8) now sit only two games out of the tournament.

Joe Eberhard (21) and John Dickson (20) combined for 41 points to lead Sacramento State, who never trailed against the Eagles (11-13, 5-6).The Hornets opened up a 19-point lead at the half shooting 50 percent from both the field (14-28) and beyond the arc (6-12).

Saturday’s game marked not only the third-straight win for Sacramento State – their longest winning streak of the season – but also was the third consecutive game in which the Hornets snapped a losing streak of some form.

This time it was a 15-game losing streak at Eastern Washington. Sacramento State had not beaten the Eagles in Cheney since Jan. 19, 1995.

Hornets Fall To Eastern Washington, Remain Winless In Big Sky

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

It wasn’t the way many envisioned the season going for the Sacramento State Hornets. After opening the year 5-5 the Hornets have lost five straight including four Big Sky Conference contests.

The latest loss, a 65-60 final against Eastern Washington Thursday night at The Nest, was especially heartbreaking.

“Both teams played hard,” Jackson Carbajal said. “They just made shots at the end. We kept fighting but it just didn’t go our way.”

The Hornets (5-10, 0-4) surrendered the first seven points of the game before they finally got on the board with a Konner Veteto layup over two minutes in. Continue Reading →

Big Sky Conference Picks: Week 11

We’re one week from the Big Sky Conference Game of the Century – well, sort of.

With no Montana and Montana State on the schedule until they meet in eight days, this week’s picks are going to be a tough call. We won’t try to match last week’s perfect record, but we won’t go out on many limbs, either.

Then again, our record isn’t usually this good over an entire season, so we’re ready for this to be an 0-4 week.

That said, there’s some pretty tough games to call. Lets’ dive in.

The numbers:Last week 4-0; The season: 37-15. Continue Reading →

Fleming’s Health In Question As Hornets Prepare For Northern Arizona

It may not be known until gametime if the Hornets coaches will call on the combination of Tommy Edwards (No. 14) and Garrett Safron (No. 12) against Northern Arizona on Saturday as senior quarterback Jeff Fleming nurses a leg injury. Photo by Ron Nabity. For more photos, go to nabityphotos.com.

Sacramento State’s football team may be without their starting quarterback again this week.

It remains to be seen who will get the start under center for the Hornets (3-4, 2-3 Big Sky) as they take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks (2-5, 1-4) at 6:05pm at Hornet Stadium on Saturday.

Jeff Fleming sat out last week’s game against Eastern Washington nursing an injury to the lower portion of his right leg.

Coach Marshall Sperbeck is holding his cards close to his vest regarding who will get the start. If it isn’t Fleming, Sperbeck will employ a two-quarterback system where both Garrett Safron and Tommy Edwards split time under center like he did in the loss to Eastern Washington last Saturday. SacStateSports’ Big Sky Conference Picks: Week 9

With an odd number of teams in the Big Sky Conference, you’re more than likely to get a non-conference game each week.

Somehow, those games haven’t been as close as they were the first weekend of the season when Sacramento State defeated Oregon State and Eastern Washington and Weber State came within a field goal of big upsets.

Maybe its because the rest of the country wised up to how good the Big Sky can  be  or maybe the Big Sky has beat up on itself too much.

Regardless, this week’s non-conference game feels like a conference game. Northern Colorado will play host to North Dakota, which joins the league next season. This one will be a blowout, but it will give you a glimpse of how good UND will be in the league next season.

That is, unless the logo controversy turns off the Big Sky presidents so much that they pull back the invitation. On to the picks. Continue Reading →

Sac State Recruiting Update: Could Underclass QB Success Turn Off Prospects?

Eric Ascencio is one of four quarterbacks considering Sacramento State.

If you’re a fan of Sacramento State football, you had to feel good about the future of the program after watching last Saturday’s 42-35 loss to Eastern Washington. But you have to wonder what that loss did for recruiting.

With starter Jeff Fleming nursing a strained calf muscle, freshman Garrett Safron and sophomore transfer Tommy Edwards stepped up to help the Hornets gain 545 yards total offense. Edwards threw for 223 yards and Safron became the first Sac State quarterback to run for 100 yards in a game.

“They’ve only played one game, too,” Coach Marshall Sperbeck said.  “We’ve got to continue to evaluate it. I think it was a good start.”

However, the Hornets are in the hunt for four quarterbacks, according to Rivals.com.While Sperbeck said it is good to know the cupboard isn’t bare, that’ s four quarterbacks who probably looked at Sac State and thought they had legitimate shot at replacing Fleming, a senior who had made 16 consecutive starts prior to the EWU game. EWU’s Edwards Earns Big Sky, National Awards For Game Vs. Sac State

How impressive was Eastern Washington’s overtime victory at Sacramento State on Saturday night? Eastern Washington wide receiver Nicholas Edwards’ four-touchdown performance was good for two major awards.

Edwards was not only selected as the Big Sky Conference offensive player of the week, but also The Sports Network’s national co-offensive player of the week.

Not so fast. He also was selected for National Performer of the Week and National Wide Receiver of the Week from College Football Performance Awards. Edwards caught 11 passes for 192 yards. Plus, three of this touchdown catches were in the fourth quarter.

This marked the third consecutive week that the Eagles have been awarded a Big Sky offensive player award. Quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell won the previous two Big Sky awards. Edwards shared the award with a future Big Sky player – Southern Utah running back Austin Minefee, who had 286 all-purpose yards in a victory over Weber State.

Also, kicker Eastern Washington Mike Jarrett was selected as the Big Sky special teams player of the week.
