Sac State Football: 2011 Season In Review

Sac State Coach Marshall Sperbeck had to make adjustments all season. Photo by Jesse Charlton

By Kyle Madson, SacStateSports Staff Writer

The Sacramento State football team had a difficult year in 2011. For the Hornets it was a season full of ups, downs, good times and bad times.

They started with one of the biggest upsets of the college football season and ended it with the biggest disappointment of their year. They finished 4-7 during a season when fans were starting to make plans for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. Now, they’re spending Thanksgiving asking what went wrong.

Let us relive that roller-coaster ride of the season with the best and worst we saw of the Hornets.

TOP FIVE PLAYERS

5. John Hendershott (WR/KR):  Hendershott went out with a bang in his final season with the Hornets, and did so in multiple facets of the game.  As a kick returner, Hendershott thrived.  He returned 31 kicks, averaged 21.5 yards per return and returned one 91 yards for a touchdown at Montana State.  He was also the Hornets’ most consistent force in the receiving game, catching 31 balls for 264 yards. Hilliard To Cap Courageous Career In Causeway Classic

Sac State running back Bryan Hilliard (34) will be playing his final collegiate game today when the Hornets meet the UC Davis Aggies in the Causeway Classic.

By John Parker, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Today, for the final time, Bryan Hilliard will prepare for a football game.

Both ankles, which have made thousands of cuts between practices and games at the pee-wee, high school and collegiate levels, will be taped. Protective cushioning will be slipped over piston-like thighs that have powered the speedy, shifty, yet bruising back through innumerable carries. And pads will be buckled onto two broad, surgically repaired shoulders, mementos from pinball hits taken and blocks thrown.

Hilliard, a fifth-year senior and Sac State’s third all-time leading rusher with 3,482 yards entering the 58th Causeway Classic today at 1:05 p.m., said he approaches every gameday carry, every blitz pick-up, every practice rep like it will be his last. Now that he invariably stares his last game in the face today at Hornet Stadium, he greets the notion with equal parts enthusiasm and relief.

“I’ve had a good career here but, man, my body it hurts sometimes,” Hilliard said after Wednesday night’s practice hunched over on the leather sofa outside of the coaches’ suites in the Broad Athletic Facility. “I don’t think I’ll be playing no more … sometimes you gotta cut your losses. I still want to be able to play with my kids.” Continue Reading →

Sac State Morning Wake-Up Call: Causeway Classic Gameday Edition

Are you ready for some football? Sacramento State and UC Davis better be as we get some matinee football today with the Causeway Classic. And another reminder – it’s a 1:05 p.m. game thanks to CSN CA televising  it, not a 2:05 p.m. no matter what the tickets say. Here are some links to get your Causeway Gameay started:

First our video of the day takes you back to last year’s Causeway, which was won by UC Davis. It included, among other things, a monsoon delay that we shouldn’t see today:

In Hornets football news:

* The Sacramento Bee’s Dave Carpenter wrote that this could be a close matchup.

* The State Hornet had a great interactive timeline of the Causeway Classic. Great idea by their staff.

* The Davis Enterprise’s Bob Dunning takes a mild shot at the Hornets today.

* SacStateSports’ Kyle Madson previewed the game, looking at how this game can be bandaid for both teams.

* The Davis Enterprise also had a preview looking at how a win today would make the Aggies feel better. Continue Reading →

Sac State’s Football Pregame Playlist Spans Genres, Generations

By John Parker, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

The music has changed since the days Marshall Sperbeck grooved to the funk of The Ohio Players and the Commodores during his senior year at Valley High School, but the game has remained very much the same.

Nowadays the coach said he likes to reach further into the past, listening to mainly Motown hits to get his mind right while preparing gameplans.

But football players, about to engage in an emotional and physical battle, have long used music to prepare for games. This Saturday as Sperbeck’s swarm march in during the Hornet Walk before the 6:05 p.m. game against Eastern Washington, take note of how many have the signature white Apple earbuds or bulky over-the-ear Dr. Dre Beats headphones.

We took took a sample of the football squad’s collective musical ear to put together the Hornets Pregame Playlist:

1. “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)” – AC/DC, contributed by Jeff Fleming, Sr. QB.
Fleming doesn’t have to listen to one particular song by the Australian rock quartet but for the home opener against Montana marched in listening to his custom Pandora Internet radio station formed around the band.

“For me it’s just trying to get rid of distractions,” he said. “I’m going through little things in my head. The tempo just getting (me) ready.” Continue Reading →

Montana State Holds on For 31-21 Win Over Hornets

Editor’s note: This game report is based on the television broadcast and stats provided by Montana State and Sacramento State media relations.

The Sac State football team’s Jekyll & Hyde act continues to haunt. The Hornets squandered multiple opportunities on Saturday in a 31-21 loss at No. 4 Montana State in Bozeman, Mont.

Sac State senior quarterback Jeff Fleming fumbled a snap on third-and-goal from the 1-yard line with 5:20 remaining in the game as the 25th-ranked Hornets looked to cut into a 31-21 lead. That sequence was set up by an athletic one-handed catch from senior wide receiver Brandyn Reed, who had caught a 20-yard pass on the Hornets’ previous offensive series, on a ball heaved by Fleming under duress from near midfield.

On the same end of the field – which had been closed in with seats in a stadium renovation in the offseason, where a raucous student section was reveling in the Bobcats’ Homecoming on Saturday – the Hornets failed to come away with points at the end of the first half. Continue Reading →

Complete box score

By John Parker, SacStateSports.com

The watershed moments keep on coming in the fifth year of coach Marshall Sperbeck’s tenure.

The Hornets used a methodical offensive attack and big plays on defense and special teams Saturday night in a 42-28 romp over No. 10 Montana, beating the Grizzlies in football for the first time in 17 tries.

“You can only go one game at a time, but (we have) definitely heard a lot about it,” Sperbeck said of coming in 0-16 against the Grizzlies. “But if you’re going to make noise in this conference, you have to beat Montana.” Continue Reading →

Sac State Blown Out Again As Weber State Rolls To 49-17 Victory

This story was reported from online TV and radio broadcast reports.

OGDEN, Utah - One step forward, two steps back.

The Sacramento State Hornets suffered their second consecutive TKO on Saturday – not just a loss – two weeks after after shocking the college football world.

Weber State literally ran over Sac State in the second half, scoring a 49-17 knockout in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams at Stewart Stadium.

“We didn’t play as well as we probably could have,” Sac State Coach Marshall Sperbeck told the Utah media. “We got it handed to us pretty good tonight. Weber State came in ready to play and they took it to us pretty good.”

The loss was the second in a row for No. 20-ranked Sac State (1-2), which had opened the season with an upset victory over Football Bowl Subdivision foe Oregon State. However, the Hornets have since been outscored 84-31 on the road against two Football Championship Subdivision teams. Continue Reading →
