Portland State Ends Hornets Men’s Playoff Hopes

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

Damien Lillard and Will Cherry are arguably the top guards in the Big Sky Conference, but the Sacramento State Hornets were able to at least make life difficult when they brought their respective teams to town.

That wasn’t the case Thursday night against Charles Odum and the Portland State Vikings.

Odum recorded a game and career-high 38 points in 36 minutes for the Vikings as Portland State ended the Hornets playoff hopes with a 94-88 victory at The Nest.

“We couldn’t guard him,” Coach Brian Katz said. “That was the difference in the game.” Continue Reading →

Carbajal scores career-high 24; Hornets fall in ESPN BracketBuster

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

Neither Jackson Carbajal’s career-high 24 points nor Dylan Garrity’s third career double-double was enough for the Sacramento State Hornets in their Sears ESPN BracketBuster against San Jose State.

The Spartans, who scrimmaged the Hornets before the season began, came back from a 12-point deficit to win 79-67 Saturday night in Sacramento.

“I thought we did a good job containing their penetration in the first half,” head coach Brian Katz said. “The second half they got in the lane.”

Katz said playing against San Jose State’s (9-17, 1-9 WAC) Wil Carter created a dilemma for the Hornets (9-17, 4-10 Big Sky) because his players aren’t as big and athletic as those in the Spartans’ conference.

Sacramento State was forced to double team Carter in the low post, which left the perimeter open and allowed San Jose State’s guard to drive the lane.

The Spartans scored seven of the game’s first nine points.

Sacramento State responded with a seven-minute, 15-0 run to take the lead.

Carbajal extended the gap to 11 twice; first with a three at 9:34 and again with a foul shot on a three-point play at 8:20.

The Spartans chipped away in short spurts and closed the gap to 37-31 at the half.

Carbajal led all scorers at the break with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting while Garrity had seven assists.

“We thought that’s how he would play this year,” Katz said. “He missed from the first minute of the first game until the first league game, so it took some time.”

The Hornets opened the second half with a 9-3 run to extend the lead to 12 with 16:05 remaining. All three points for San Jose State were free throws.

The game changed dramatically after that, however, as the Spartans came alive with a 16-2 run to retake the lead 50-48 with under 11 minutes left.

Sacramento State fought back to tie the game at 59, but a 10-0 run over a two minute span gave San Jose State the lead with 5:48 left.

The Spartans answered every Hornet basket down the stretch to secure the victory. A layup by James Kinney with 26 seconds left put the exclamation point on the night.

San Jose State shot 68.2 percent (15-22) from the field – including 6-for-7 from three – in the second half after opening the game just 3-for-12 in the first eight minutes.

Kinney and Wil Carter scored a team-high 19 for San Jose State, with 11 of Carter’s points coming in the second half.

Carter also recorded a game-high eight rebounds while Kinney picked up seven.

Garrity finished with 10 points and a game-high 12 assists. Joe Eberhard also had 10 points for Sacramento State.

John Dickson added 15 points off the bench for the Hornets.

“I felt like we needed a little punch coming off the bench,” Katz said.

Dickson said that he feels comfortable with his role, especially because of the chemistry that has developed among the starters.

Sacramento State now has two games remaining as they try to chase down the final spot in the Big Sky tournament.

“I like to put the pressure on the guys to figure that out,” Katz said. “If you don’t win it doesn’t matter.”

Dickson said the team has to get back to practice and find ways to improve and finish the season strong.

“There’s always places you can improve,” Dickson said.

Hornets Winning Streak Ends At Home Against Montana

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

In front of their second largest home crowd this season, the Sacramento State Hornets fell short of a school record tying five-game winning streak.

Sacramento State squandered at five-point halftime lead to fall 67-58 to the visiting Montana Grizzlies in front of an announced crowd of 818 Saturday night at The Nest.

“I thought we really competed,” Coach Brian Katz said. “We just got in trouble first with their press and then their zone.”

The Hornets (9-15, 4-9) were simply outmatched by the Grizzlies (19-6, 12-1), who extended their winning streak to eight games and tied their own school record for best start in the Big Sky Conference.

Back-to-back baskets in the first minute of play by Art Steward and Kareem Jamar for Montana seemed to set the tone for a repeat performance of the Grizzlies’ blowout win over the Hornets earlier this season. Continue Reading →

Record night for Garrity powers Hornets to fourth-straight win

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

Two weeks ago the Sacramento State Hornets men’s basketball team had lost nine straight games and it looked like a season that started out as one of the best in school history was destined for a disappointing end.

One problem: someone forgot to tell the Hornets.

Sacramento State defeated Montana State 86-76 Thursday night at the Nest to win their season-high fourth-straight game on a record-setting night for point guard Dylan Garrity.

Garrity dished out 16 assists, the most in a Big Sky game in 21 seasons.

“We’ve got more confidence coming off these wins,” junior swingman Joe Eberhard said. “We started playing a full 40 minutes where before we would have one good half and one bad half.”

The four-game winning streak is the best since the Hornets (9-14, 4-8) won five in a row from Dec. 29, 2005 – Jan. 14, 2006 and ties last season’s conference win total with only four games to play. Continue Reading →

Hornet Men Break Losing Streak in Historic Fashion

By John Parker, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

The last time the Sac State men’s basketball team won a game fall semester finals had just concluded and grades had not yet been posted.

The Hornets earned high marks in ending a nine-game losing streak dating back to Dec. 18, 2011 with a 77-43 win over Northern Arizona in front of an announced crowd of 709 at the Nest on Saturday night. The 77 points were a season high and the 34-point differential is the Hornets’ biggest margin of victory ever over a Division I opponent – the Hornets began competing in D-I regularly in 1991. Lillard’s 21 Points, Mahoney’s First Double-Double Power Wildcats Past Hornets

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com staff writer

The best players draw the best crowds. When NCAA leading scorer Damian Lillard and the Weber State Wildcats came to town Thursday night they brought in the largest crowd the Sacramento State Hornets have seen at home all season.

Included in that crowd were 10 NBA scouts from nine different teams and a few players such as the Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins.

In front of a crowd of 823, the Wildcats (16-3, 8-0) showed that they have more than just Lillard’s 25.1 points per game as they led start-to-finish in a 75-60 win over the Hornets.

“Everybody’s made a big deal about his scoring,” Hornets’ head coach Brian Katz said. “They’re really a balanced team. He’s very comfortable scoring below his average.” Continue Reading →

Hornets Fall To Eastern Washington, Remain Winless In Big Sky

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

It wasn’t the way many envisioned the season going for the Sacramento State Hornets. After opening the year 5-5 the Hornets have lost five straight including four Big Sky Conference contests.

The latest loss, a 65-60 final against Eastern Washington Thursday night at The Nest, was especially heartbreaking.

“Both teams played hard,” Jackson Carbajal said. “They just made shots at the end. We kept fighting but it just didn’t go our way.”

The Hornets (5-10, 0-4) surrendered the first seven points of the game before they finally got on the board with a Konner Veteto layup over two minutes in. Continue Reading →

Jackson Leaves Hornets Men’s Hoops Team; Carbajal Returns From Injury

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

For the second time in three months, the Sacramento State men’s basketball team has lost a player because of personal reasons.

Guard/forward Walter Jackson left the team prior to their conference-opener against Northern Arizona. According to a team spokesman, Jackson’s departure went unreported in the hopes of maintaining a competitive edge over the Lumberjacks.

Hornets Coach Brian Katz said Jackson came to him about two minutes before practice Dec. 26 and told him he “didn’t want to play basketball anymore.”

Despite the loss of one of most athletic players for Sac State (5-7, 0-1) , Katz said he wasn’t concerned because of the recent return of Jackson Carbajal. Continue Reading →

Freshman Garrity Lucky And Good For Hornets Coach Katz

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Dylan Garrity may have been a "lucky" find for Hornets coach Brian Katz, but his skill has him among the top assists leaders in the country. Photo by Ron Nabity. For more photos, go to www.NabityPhotos.com.

Brian Katz said he is either very lucky, or very good. Either way, he’ll take it.

The Sacramento State men’s basketball coach was watching a game at Huntington Beach Edison High School and he knew after one quarter he had found the next Hornets star.

“I called my assistant coach and said ‘I’m going to offer him,’ ” Katz said, who usually prefers to watch a player in multiple games before offering a scholarship. But what he saw that day in Dylan Garrity was enough to make him want the two-time all-state guard on the spot.

One year later, Garrity has become the driver for Sac State’s offense. He is one of the biggest reasons the Hornets are 5-6 entering Big Sky Conference play tonight at Northern Arizona. That’s two more victories than Sac State had in non-conference play last season and the most non-league wins since 2005-06 when they started 9-5.

Garrity may be the biggest reason for the improvement. He is the only freshman to rank in the top 30 in assists this season with a 6.9 per game average. And he has settled into the Hornets offense quickly, helping it score almost four more points a game.

All because Katz was impressed by one quarter. Continue Reading →

Garrity Posts First Double-Double, But Hornets Fall To SEMO

By Bryan Metcalf, SacStateSports.com Staff Writer

Dylan Garrity’s first career double-double wasn’t enough.

Despite Garrity’s heroics, the Sacramento State men’s basketball team came up short against Southeast Missouri State Thursday night, losing 77-76 at home in their final game before starting Big Sky Conference play next week.

Lucas Nutt made the first of two free-throw attempts with 3.3 seconds left to give the Redhawks (5-7) the lead with and then the Hornets (5-6) called their final timeout. When Nutt seemed to deliberately miss the second shot, John Dickson attempted a buzzer-beater from behind half court that was well short.

The Hornets (5-6) had no answer for the Redhawks long-range shooting. Southeast Missouri finished the game shooting 48 percent (12-25) from three-point range, most of that damage being done in the first half.

Hornets head coach Brian Katz said he wouldn’t have believed it if someone told him his team would lose because of three-point defense. Continue Reading →
