ESPN has announced that Sacramento State will host San Jose State on Feb. 18 as part of the 10th Annual Sears Bracketbusters tournament.
This game, which will be played at Hornet Gym, is unlikely to be televised on any of the ESPN networks. Thegame is scheduled for a Sunday and the tipoff time has yet to be announced.
The Hornets (6-14, 1-8 Big Sky) and Spartans (7-15, 0-7 WAC) scrimmaged before the season began. Their last official meeting was during the 2003-04 season, with San Jose State winning in overtime 85-77.
This will be the 21st official meeting between the two schools. Sacramento State is 2-18 in the all-time series. The two teams will meet next season in San Jose as part of the agreement.
Jon Reed, who publishes the blog BigSkyBBall.com, suggested this would be a likely matchup as both schools have struggled in conference play after promising starts to their season.
The BracketBusters concept provides participating programs with an opportunity to play non-conference opponents roughly three weeks before Selection Sunday. Each conference selected its participating teams before the season and the matchups for the event were determined by ESPN in conjunction with the leagues.
The tournament runs Feb. 17-19 and will feature 142 teams in 71 games.
Last year Sacramento State traveled to Southeastern Missouri and this year the Redhawks made the trip west.
